What’s the Deal with the Battery Disconnect Switch?

Ask an RV Expert Banner

Question

We recently had to replace both the engine and coach batteries on our RV. There is a button on the door for battery use or store. What is that button supposed to be on? We’re newbies to the big RV.

Answer

Welcome to the wonderful world of RVing! This switch is commonly called the Battery Disconnect Switch and is designed to disconnect your house batteries while being stored.

Pushing it to the Storage side is like taking off the battery cable. It ensures that if you have left a light on in a compartment or anything inside, it will not drain your house batteries. Some RV manufacturers connect the LP Leak Detector directly to the battery bypassing the disconnect, so you may still have a draw even with the switch on Storage.

To find out if this is the case with your rig, get a 12-volt test light, push the switch to Storage, then disconnect the negative terminal on one of the batteries. Touch the probe to the post and the alligator clip to the cable. If the light comes on, you have a draw.

Safe travels,
David Solberg

I have an 2024 Coleman Lantern and I’m wanting to know what is my battery controlling? What is the purpose of my battery if it shows I have 3/4 battery life, but nothing is working?

The battery operates the 12vdc side of the camper. There are two voltage sources, 120vAC and12vDC. The breakers for the camper are powered by 120vAC shore power voltage. The breakers do not get power from the battery. The breakers functions off of 120v shore power to operate things like outlets, air conditioner, microwave, TV, and some other appliances. These components will not operate off of the battery. The fuse panel is powered by the 12vDC battery voltage. If you look at your fuse panel, all of those listed circuits are powered by the battery. The 12v fuse panel usually consists of components like the lights, water pump, radio, monitor panel, furnace, awning, slide outs, and the fridge (control board). If none of those components are functioning off of the battery, there could be a few things wrong. If you have a battery disconnect switch, make sure it is in the “on” position. Also double check to make sure all connections at the battery are correct. There can sometimes be an inline fuse near the battery following the main positive wire, make sure this fuse and connection is good. The next thing to check would be the main fuse panel and make sure none of the fuses are blown. If the fuses are good, you then want to check the ground wire from the fuse panel. Check the panel for a bare wire metal wire that should go through the floor and connect to the chassis framing. If this connection broke, it can prevent the 12v system from working properly. I hope this was helpful!Sincerely,DanRV Lifestyle and Repair Technical Expert

My RV does not have gutters, which is surprising to me. Does that seem normal for this coach? Regardless, do you have a suggestion as to how I go about getting one, at least on the passenger side? Getting tired of the A/C dripping onto the awning or other areas where we frequent outside the coach.

    Newbee here….
I recently lost my auto transfer switch at at state park, they have balked on responsibility, but that’s another conversation. I have replace the transfer switch(upgraded with surge protector!!), but now only have shore power. Solar or gen power would be nice on occasion. Blown inverter?? How can I troubleshoot? point me to an EXCLENT video please!!
Keep in mind, you are reading this post from someone who only knows that something turn on or off when you flip a switch. And I’m not prepared to pay someone $100 just to tell me they can fix it for $1500!!!!

If you installed a new transfer switch and only shore power is working, I would first make sure it was installed properly. We do have a video showing this, I will share the link below. If the switch is fine and the generator is not working still then there is an issue with the generator itself. If the generator runs but no voltage is going through, then the voltage regulator or another component has failed within the generator. Solar only connects to the 12v batteries, it doesn’t connect to the 120v circuit like shore power. If there is an issue with the solar then you would need to troubleshoot the 12v side and check the connections and the controller to see what the output is. The converter within the power distribution center takes 120v shore power and creates 12v to power the fuse panel and charge the batteries. If you aren’t getting 12v at all then there could be an issue with the converter or a possible blown fuse for the circuit. Really the only way to know what is causing an issue is to trace the voltage and see what is not working properly. If you had a power surge bad enough to damage a transfer switch, it is possible multiple other components failed as well.

Our dash ac/heater outlets only blow ac. It never changes to heat when we move the control knob from ac to heat. I have checked the heater hose source and return with the engine at temperature and both sides are hot, so the vacuum heater switch lets antifreeze cycle from and to the engine and through the front heater coils. I looks like the issue is in the dash air ducting maybe. How do I trouble shoot the vacuum controls? I have checked to vacuum pump and it registers 15″ with a vacuum gauge.

      Hi Lisa,
It sounds like there could be some loose connections somewhere or the ignition switch is failing. You will need to check the connections to the ignition switch, dash controls, starter etc. It is common for the ignition switch to fail so that might be the issue but when it comes to problems like this, there could be many things causing the issue. Since it doesn’t always make that sound, it leads me to believe the ignition switch could be the cause. It sounds like a contact isn’t completing the circuit and won’t allow it to start.

      Hello Margaret,

      Thank you for contacting us.
I would first check to see if anything else works off of 12v and check the battery monitor to see if there is voltage coming in. If not, you want to start by checking the battery and connections. If there are other 12v items working like the furnace, water pump, vent fans and slide outs, then you want to check the fuses next. Look for a blow fuse and replace if needed. If the fuses are fine then you want to check the wall switch, could be a loose connection behind it. After that you would have to remove the lights and check the connections going to them. Many lights are connected off of one main source from another light and if that connection is bad it can prevent the rest of the lights from working.

If you have any other questions, please chat, email, or call Customer Service.

I just purchased this 2006 Winnebago 31c and replaced the two coach batteries (they are wired in parallel, of course) The problem is the only situation that the time the coach house lights work (lights, or anything else in the coach) is when the motorhome is plugged in to house 110v ac . Now when the motorhome starts or when the unit is plugged into house current, the voltage to either battery rises, which indicates the charging circuit is operating normally. When either source is turned off, the coach lights go off immediately. Is there some master switch that is hidden that will not allow coach lights to operate when either power source is turned off and the coach portion lighting must operate from the two deep cycle batteries? Again, the only time anything in the house section works is when the unit is plugged into 110v AC source. What am I missing? Thanks, Bob

      Hello Customer,

      Thank you for contacting us.

Most likely you will have to replace the visor. They don’t sell the motors for these separately and typically once they go bad there isn’t much that can be done other than replacement. I have heard of people taking them apart and trying to fashion a different motor to work or rebuild the existing one but from what I have seen, replacement is the best option.

Just installed both chassic and house batteries and can not get the disconnect switch on the dash to work. The chassic battery is connect and working find but when I push the house disconnect switch to on the house batteries will still not connect. I have check the fuse at the solonoid and it is still good. Is there any videos on how to check the solonoid to see if it is good. Is that also video on how to check the switch to make sure there is no problems with it.

      Hello David,

      Thank you for contacting us.

We don’t have a video for this just yet. To test a solenoid you just need to test the output voltage when activated. You can use the housing as a ground and test for voltage on all of the terminals when activated. If there is no voltage going through, the solenoid is bad. To test a switch you can do the same but can also test the switch terminals for continuity. Just testing to see if voltage can pass through is the best way of knowing if they work or not. I would test these but also check all connections to make sure they are good as well.

I shut my aux disconnect switch off last fall and now it won’t connect to allow me to use my lights or start my gen. I have 110 volets to my Ref. Micro. and coffee maker, but nothing in 12V. where would I start to check this problem.

    Reply
    • Customer Service

Hi Gary. The two best places to start checking would be at the battery and converter to make sure there is good voltage at both of these. If the converter is not putting out voltage or the battery is bad then these would have to be fixed first. If there is voltage at both then you have to trace the connections to see where voltage is lost. It is possible the switch you mentioned is bad. I would remove the switch and test for continuity on the terminals to make sure it is working properly. There could be other bad connections or components as well so really the best thing to do is trace the circuit and see where the voltage is not getting through.

I do have a battery disconnect and it is turned off while not in service. thanks in advance.

Hello Thomas. Normally the chassis battery doesn’t get a charge while plugged into shore power unless a switch is turned on. They isolate the chassis battery from the house batteries so it doesn’t drain when using the living area when not plugged in. The systems are usually only connected when the engine is running or a switch is turned on. The disconnect switch you have is for the house batteries, it is to disconnect the house batteries when not in use so they don’t drain. Some RV’s have a switch to combine the system of batteries to get them all charged but not all have that option. The switch is usually by the dash if you have this. If not, you will have to set up a separate charger for the engine battery.

Yes I understand that the switch is for the house batteries only, however I’ve check all the fuses I can find and nothing is durning on my lights. I had a problem a couple of years ago, that I had to hit the on side of the switch a few times and then my lights went on for the remainder of the season. Could it be just a switch problem.

      Hello Dave,

Here is what our experts had to say:

The house batteries will have some sort of protective device near the batteries, either a fuse or a breaker. There could also be a bad connection as well that is preventing the batteries from working. You will want to start by checking the batteries and around that area as there should be a fuse near them. It is possible there is a problem with the wiring since you are experiencing the other symptoms as well with the switch and generator.

      Hello Jacques,

      Thank you for contacting us.

Most likely there is an issue with the compressor on the AC shorting out. You would have to test the compressor to see if the readings are within specs. You have to disconnect the terminals, three of them, and check the Ohm readings between C+R and C+S then compare it to R+S and it should be about equal. If really off, the compressor is bad. You can also check continuity from any of the terminals to bare metal on the housing and there should not be any. If there is continuity then the compressor is bad. It is possible there is is a wiring issue at the capacitors or somewhere else around the controls but typically this issue means the compressor is bad and the AC needs replaced.

With the generator running, if I hit the battery disconnect switch, the generator kills. Is this normal? And why would the generator need the coach battery to run once it has been started?

    Reply
    • Customer Service

      Hello John,
Here’s what the experts had to say about your question:

The generator has a battery rectifier that produces 12v while it is running to charge the battery and to keep the generator running. The battery is only really needed to start the generator. Once it is started it could be removed and the generator would keep running with the rectifier powering the components needed. If it dies when the battery is removed, most likely there is an issue with the rectifier.

    • Customer Service

      Hello Tony,
Here’s what the experts had to say about your question:

There aren’t technically chassis disconnect switches. There are switches to use the chassis battery to operate something temporarily in the living area to either run a slide in or start a generator but there isn’t a switch to kill the battery from everything. There are many RV’s with an isolator switch that connects the chassis and house batteries during travel and when the ignition is turned off the switch closes the connection to prevent the chassis battery from draining when using the house batteries. The switch you mentioned by the disconnect switch is just for the house batteries to prevent them from draining from things like the LP detector when not in use.

    • Customer Service

      Hello Sharon,
Here’s what the experts had to say about your question:

You want the switch to be “on” when the RV is in use. This is so the battery can get a charge from the converter while connected to shore power and also during travel. When the switch is set to “off” they battery should not get a charge and should also not drain. This is a battery disconnect switch and with the switch set to “off” the battery should be isolated from the system. You set it to “off” when not in use to prevent the battery from draining. There is always a constant draw from the battery so you want to make sure to turn the switch off when not in use so it doesn’t drain the battery. When using the RV, always leave the switch “on”.

Hello Steven. You will have to check the battery connections and the wires from the batteries going inside of the RV. There is another protection device for the batteries you will need to trace. This is usually a 30 amp fuse or resettable breaker. It is typically near the batteries or in the same area. You will have to trace the positive wires from the batteries and see where they go to find this. You also want to check the negative wire from the batteries as well. This connects to the chassis for a ground connection at some point. If this ground is bad or loose, it will prevent the batteries from working at all. You said you check the fuses but make sure you are checking the fuses at the main power center with the breakers inside the living area, this is where the batteries send voltage. Really tracing the wires and checking every connection and safety device between them is the best way to trace where the voltage might be lost. Also check for a battery disconnect switch. It is possible you have a bad switch it is in the “off” position. I hope this helps!

      Hello Jimmie,

      Thank you for contacting us.

This happens most from a loose connection or power failure at the outlet you are plugged into. It is possible there is just something loose. It could be the prongs inside the outlet, adapter, shore cord or at the main power center. Most of the time it is an issue with the adapter you are using or the outlet you are plugged into. You just want to make sure to check all connections you can. Start with the main wires coming in to the breakers at the power center. Tighten all connections. Next check the shore cord end where you have it plugged into. Make sure it doesn’t have any play, it needs to be tight at all connections. If you are still having issues it is either the outlet you are plugged into or the adapter you are using.

      Hello Dennis,

      Thank you for contacting us.

All of those are dash components and shouldn’t be affected by the disconnect switch. The disconnect switch just turns off the house battery connection to the system to prevent battery drain. The chassis components will always be connected to the chassis battery system. With that many faulty components there could be a bad wiring issue under the dash. It could be a larger wire harness or maybe some wires have frayed but you will have to gain access to under the dash and inspect the areas. All of these are most likely on different circuits but the one thing they could share is a ground connection. Make sure to check all negative wires and wire bundles. A bad or loose ground connection through the negative wire is the most common wiring issue. Also check the battery terminal connections and the ground connection from the negative terminal to the chassis bare metal ground.

We are new owners and I recently purchased a 20′ Rhino sewer drain hose and tried to stow it away in the 4″ rear bumper and it won’t fit. I tried rotating both ends in every conceivable position and no go. On the Rhino box it says it will fit 4″ bumpers. The bumper’s outside measurement is 4″. What’s wrong here and what’s the remedy? Thanks.

    Reply
    • Customer Service

Hi Fred. This is a common issue I have heard about these hoses. The inside needs to be at least 4″ for them to fit. Not all bumpers are made the same. I have even seen articles where Rhino said some modifications might be needed like grinding down parts of the collar to make it fit. I know on a lot of Rhino products the collar end does twist off which would make it fit better. Other than that though it might not work. There are other things that can be done like adding the Valterra sewer hose storage tube on top of the bumper. These allow for more room for certain sewer hoses. Unfortunately these are really the only options other than using a different set of hose ends.

Good afternoon, I have 4 Power Sonic Lithium ion 125ah batteries that are connected via a battery disconnect switch (and battery fuse connected between the battery and inverters positive side) to a 2000 watt pure sine wave inverter that I would like to use as a emergency power to run a fan or essential devices should there be an issue with shore power or if I need to boondock ( I do have a furrion solar panel connection and 2, 100 watt solar panels I’d love to connect in for recharge purposes. How can I enable this to be switched over without causing issues such as a fire or damage to the onboard electrical system? I can provide pictures of the current setup for clarifications if need be for clarification. Thank you.

    Reply
    • Customer Service

Hi Charles. Actually there really isn’t a way to connect it wrong to the system and cause an issue. All you have to do with the Furrion system is to tie it to the main 12v battery connections. It can be anywhere inline from the batteries to the converter but typically at the batteries is best. You will want to install a 20amp fuse from the connection but that is all that is really needed. You will want a controller, could be Furrion or other brand. This will prevent over charging and will tell you the condition. You don’t want to just install panels directly inline unless they have over charge protection. You can install a disconnect switch at the battery connection to make sure it is only sending voltage when you want to.

I am installing solar panels on my RV. I have (2) 12 volt batteries hooked in parallel. My question is do the cables running from the controller to the battery have to be connected to the last battery where the cables to the RV run or can I hook them to the first battery? I just have a lot of cable connections on the short threaded post

      Hello Angela,

Thank you for contacting us. Here is the experts response:

It sounds like there is a loose connection at the battery. A lot of times it can come down to a loose ground wire or weak battery. You would need to have someone inspect the wires from the batteries. It could be many things. There could also be an issue with the starter but from the sounds of it, it sounds like a voltage issue. The best thing to try first is to remove the battery terminal connections, clean any corrosion or debris off and re connect them. If it still doesn’t start you would have to trace the wires and see where a loose or bad connection is.

Ticket 35304 We are new to this so I hope you can help. We have no side or rear outside lights. Thinking maybe a fuse we started checking and replacing fuses. While changing one in engine compartment, one sparked. Now we can’t start the engine. It says NO ENG. We disconnected the batteries from for 2 days thinking maybe it would reset itself but it didn’t work. Can you give any advise

    Reply
    • Customer Service

      Hello Jaylene,

Thank you for contacting us. Here is the experts response:

The NO ENG code means there is no communication to the ICU control board. Most likely because a fuse was blown from the spark. Make sure to use plastic pliers to remove fuses so you don’t accidentally touch metal and make a fuse blow. You will need to re check these fuses and test them to see what is wrong. There should be a fuse for the ICU so start with that and then one for the running lights. If the running lights still do not work it could be a wiring issue and most of the time if they are all out the wiring issue will be in the cluster of wires to the fuse panel.

We recently killed our two year old 12 V house battery because it was parked too long without a trickle charger. During the pandemic we could not travel for 8 months and live in Alaska. We have not used a trickle charger b/c we had a cover on it due to the age of the paint, we wanted protection.
Will the trickle charger work even with a cover on the vehicle? We had a new battery installed and purchased a solar charger to put in the windshield that will be plugged in to the house battery via a port. If we install a kill switch can we still trickle charge at the same time? At times there are flashing signals on the heat controller than we cannot get to turn off…but are working through that trying to figure it out. Thank you

We have purchased a used 2003 Ford R-Vision motor home and know very little about motorhomes. It is equipped with a battery use/storage system for the house batteries. This isn’t the problem, I don’t think. The place we want to store our unit during the winter requires we have a negative post disconnect switch on the ignition battery, so I installed a knife switch on the neg. post of the battery. The problem is open or closed, the chassis battery will not start the unit after sitting overnight. There is nothing, except when I put the key in the ignition the bell still rings . The cigarette lighter will still operate. Again the position of the knife switch ( open or closed) doesn’t matter and I don’t know where to start. Any suggestions? Thanks, Dave

Where is the 12v power switch for propane water heater? I removed an Atwood 10ga but only used to electric on shore power. Disconnected from rear of old unit a 3 wire cord (BGBR) but no power.

    Reply

The rear of the tank houses the 120v wires for the electric operation. There is a 12v wire that goes to the relay that activates the voltage to the heating element but there is no 12v power switch for the gas to this area. The 12v coming into the water heater goes directly to the control board on the outside of the tank. The wire coming from the switch inside at the control panel usually connects to the orange wire on the control board to start the propane operation.

After I turn the engine off my 12 volt system (lights, fridge panel, etc..) work. Then in about 20 seconds I hear a click coming from the engine fuse box for the couch in the engine compartment and they call go off and stay off until I start the engine again. The click seems to come from a solionoid behind the circut board but I can’t get the circut board removed. I’ve removed three screws, don’t see any others, but it won’t budge. I think it’s the coach battery disconnet solinoid but I can’t get to it to confirm. Any ideas how to? Thanks, Brian

In our travel trailer, just under the refrigerator on a panel is a large screw looking item that is labeled “Battery Disconnect Switch” on it and it had a small protruding piece that accidently got pushed in and now no power is working at all. How do I correct this situation?

    Reply
    • Customer Service

Most of the time those switches have a lever or key that needs turned to put the battery in disconnect mode. The lever/key pushed contacts together to make a connection to allow power through, turned the other way removes the contact. Most likely you just set it to the off mode. If the lever is broken you might have to use pliers and try to set it back out to fix it or remove the switch from the wall and you should see the two terminal connections on the back. You can just disconnect the connections on the back and tie them together and it should work fine until you get a new switch. If you don’t ever want to use the switch you can always leave them connected.

My 12v system went out. No fuses blown. I did plug a 300W inverter into the cigarette lighter. Which might have coincided with losing 12v power. There is a battery switch on the panel and it goes on. The battery is fully charged. Is there a second battery disconnect switch and where? Could I have fried the solenoid?

The black water tank sensor panel indicates it is still 1/3 full even though I just emptied it after a weekend of camping. What is the best way to ensure the tank gets empty?

    Reply
    • Customer Service

The most common issue for this happening is residue on the side walls of the tank. Your tank is most likely empty but there could still be some debris on the sensors causing it to read improperly. You want to make sure you are using the proper chemicals in the toilet when using it and only use RV rated toilet paper as well. Using these both can help ensure the contents get broken down and can help keep the sensors clean. They do make sensor cleaners that can be added to the tank to help keep them clean as well. There are other things as well like tank wands that can flush out the tank to get out more too. We do have a video going over proper chemical usage as well.

What is the basic lifespan of an electric tongue jack on a travel trailer? Is it prudent to purchase a back up?

    Reply
    • Customer Service

There really isn’t a life span to the jacks. If taken care of they can last a very long time. Most electric jacks come with a way to manually operate them if something isn’t working properly. Usually it is a wrench being able to turn the arm manually. With this option there really isn’t a need to buy an extra jack. As long as they aren’t abused and get water inside they can last a very long time.

When I use shore power nothing in the motor-home works should”t it? When I switch the battery disconnect on then the lights in the motor-home will work what do I need to purchase where the lights and everything in the motor-home will work on shore power and not the batteries?

    Reply
    • Customer Service

Whenever you are connected to shore power you want the disconnect switch to be set to the “on” position. The RV is equipped with a converter that charges the battery when plugged into shore. The battery will not get a charge if disconnected from the system. When plugged into shore power the converter will power most of the 12v items unless there is a large amp draw and the battery helps out. Some RV’s disconnected switches just remove the battery from the system, others disconnect the whole 12v system when the switch is set to off which is what yours is doing. It sounds like your disconnect switch is set up from the fuse panel to the battery and then to the converter. When you have it disconnected it cuts off the fuse panel all together. You will want the switch to be “on” whenever you are using it. It is not draining your battery as it is getting charged from the converter. The only time you want the switch to be off is during storage. You also want it on during travel so it receives a charge from the vehicles alternator as well. I hope this clears some things up!

If there is one on your trailer it can be by the battery, in a storage compartment near the front or in the main living area. Most trailers didn’t come with them in 2006 but some manufactures did use them and it is possible one was added later. Many don’t even come with them today when new. Most likely if you don’t see it near the batteries it doesn’t have one. The only way to find out is to trace the main battery positive wire and see where it leads. It should go to the main fuse panel but could hit a disconnect switch somewhere in between.

My chassis battery keeps draining. I replaced it, the new one drained down to 2 v. Installed a trickle charger and as long as shore power is hooked up it is fine but if you unplug for a day it is drained. What am I missing?

I have a leak from the shower drain. I can access the area right under the drain and it isn’t leaking there. I took the interior wall off in the bedroom, right next to the shower, and could not see a leak from there. It apparently is from lower down. Does anyone have an idea how to access that area?

    • Customer Service

      Dave,

It depends on how your RV is setup. Most of the plumbing can be behind wall panels. A lot of times it is behind panels within cabinets. They typically don’t run too many long ways through wall panels and usually have a way to access the areas where there are connections. Connections are typically where leaks happen. The shower plumbing usually meets up with the sink plumbing since they typically share the same holding tank. Most of the time they both meet at one point and then head to the tank. If you can see the direction of the plumbing, go to the other end and trace back. It might help give you a better understanding on how it was set up and maybe what to look for. You could also try contacting the manufacture as they might have a plumbing diagram that could help as well. Typically with water leaks you want to start where the leak is coming from and trace back. If it is leaking from underneath of the RV when taking a shower, it could even be the attachment on the tank and not from the plumbing of the shower directly.

digital thermostat not turning on, it happened before and the dealer replaced a circuit breaker

    Reply
    • Customer Service

      Andrew,

If the digital thermostat is not coming on you will have to check the voltage to it. You can remove the thermostat and check the wires and connections to it then check for voltage. If there is voltage then the thermostat display is bad. If there is no voltage you will have to trace where the voltage is lost. There are two areas where the thermostat can receive voltage. Either the voltage from the furnace incoming voltage or from the air conditioner control board. I would first start with the main fuse panel and make sure it isn’t something simple like a blown fuse. After that you have to trace where the voltage could be coming from. You said before it was a circuit board, if it was the AC circuit board then this is the best place to start. Some models even have a fuse on the board so make sure to check for that. You should be able to either see an indicated output for the thermostat or look at the wiring diagram attached to the AC to find the output and check the voltage as well. If the board you are talking about was on the furnace you will want to inspect this area. Again depending on how they wired it the could have the voltage output for the thermostat coming after the breaker on the furnace. This breaker protects the control board from a system short. Check this breaker and if it is fine you will have to check the input and output voltage from the furnace and thermostat connections. Really the only way of knowing is testing the voltage and seeing where it is lost. I hope this helps!

While connected to Shore Power I hear a loud snapping coming from the battery box. Sounds like a solenoid opening and closing. I am concerned something will be damaged. The former owner of this Allegro Bus complained that the house batteries were depleting even with the disconnect (pos side) thrown. The service place added a knife switch on the neg side to “solve” the problem. I’d like to share info regarding those knife switches. Their design has a serious flaw. The “cradles” can AND DO arc to the base they’re pulled down against by a philips-head screw thru a plastic insulator. Mine repeatedly lost good connection, so when I thought my generator was charging it was not. Just removed the switch until I can have the cradles soldered or brazed to the base to assure electrical continuity/capacity. Two points there: (should be obvious) remove the plastic insulator to do this, and don’t get the cradle hot enough the lose the temper/pinch on the blade.
Now, my question: If I replace that switch must a switch on the negative side have the same current capacity as the one on the positive side?

Recently my inside lights went very dim. I replaced the battery (it was abt 12y/o). Two weeks from arriving back from Fla., today lights would not work. It’s parked in garage with 110 house current. The batt. disconnect switch is /has always been on. Before taking it 50 miles to have it checked, I thought it may be the inverter gone bad. ?? Would it be worthwhile to replace it just to determine if that’s the problem? Thank You!

      Doyle,

Yes it sounds like the converter is the issue. This is what provides 12v to the system when plugged into shore power and will also charge the batteries. If the lights worked fine on the batteries and then they went out and aren’t working on shore power, most likely the converter is the issue. You will want to check the fuses before replacing though. The converter will have a fuse, sometimes on the main fuse panel but if you have a larger converter that is isolated from the rest of the distribution panel, usually directly behind it, it could have one or two fuses directly on it. If the fuses are bad, replace and see if it works now. If the fuses are fine then most likely you will have to replace the converter to fix the issue.

On a recent boondocking trip we had to use our generator due to the sun not being present to charge via solar. When we attempted to start the rv our starting battery was dead. We have a cut off switch on the negative terminal of the starting battery which we usually have in the off or disconnected position when parked for long periods. The problem is when disconnected the generator will not start or run. The other problem is the generator does not charge the starting battery while running. Is this a normal set up. Or did the previous owners rewire the system?

    Reply
    • Customer Service

      Kevin,

Well first, disconnect switches should always be on the positive terminal never the negative. Also I have never seen a disconnect switch directly at the chassis battery either. The disconnect switch we refer to is for the house batteries. The chassis battery can have a switch also but is usually inside on the dash or by the main controls, not at the actual battery. When the engine is off, there shouldn’t be anything drawing from the chassis battery so a switch there isn’t necessary as long as there isn’t an issue with something. The reason they usually give you a switch inside is to start a generator or operate slides when the house batteries are dead, to start the vehicle if the chassis battery is dead or to connect the chassis battery to the house batteries to receive a charge when plugged into shore or while running the generator. There are many generators that connect directly to the chassis battery. If you have to turn this on to operate the generator, then the battery should be getting a charge as well as long as the switch is on and connected. If the generator is starting from the chassis battery and the battery is not getting charged, there is a problem with the charging system of the generator and it should be looked into. Having that switch really isn’t a bad thing, just seems unnecessary as you would typically want that battery to always be connected to the system.

Motor battery is disconnected, coach batteries send 12 volts to starter solenoid while parked and plugged into shore power. When travelling coach batteries engage starter motor burning out engine starter. Question, could this be a faulty disconnect solenoid or interconnect solenoid.

My steering column mounted starter ignition system had a failure and I had to have it bypassed by a new dash starter. After repairs I was told that “the plug to ignition switch pigtail was melted causing no connection between the computer and key switch”. Analysis and repair to that switch cost me over $1600!! Then I found out after bringing the unit home that the main battery disconnect switch, the automatic door step and lights on warning did not work. The repair facility so far has not answered by question as to should those features have been restored to working conditions and can they? This has greatly reduced my resell value and disconnecting the battery has been a real hassle. Can this be repaired and how costly should it be?

      Ken,

Most likely those issues aren’t connected to the ignition switch. If the ignition had melted wires, it is possible that some others ones were damaged as well. The battery disconnect switch should really only be inline with the battery positive wire. If the switch doesn’t work, either the plunger is stuck or there is a stuck relay depending on the type of switch you have. The steps could have some wiring near the ignition but also typically has sensors at the door, either a switch or magnet, and can also have other secondary safety switches as well. It is possible there are connected together by the same issue but you would really have to dig into the system to find out what is going on. This is where it gets costly because of the labor it could take to trace down all of the issues. Especially in the dash area, the wiring is very difficult to trace sometimes and could take hours to locate issues.

I have a 2014 Winnebago Adventurer V10 for the Engine. I have an parking brake light and ABS light on the dash that will not go out. I have tried pushing and releasing the parking brake, but this seems not to be the problem. Was wondering if maybe this might be tied to a wheel sensor, not sure. Had my local mechanic put the diagnostic machine and it does come up with a ABS code, but since this is a bigger vehicle the machine will not tell you exactly what the code is with the ABS code. Any help would be great. Thanks Robert

      Robert,

Yeah it sounds like you would have to check all of the sensors on each wheel. A faulty sensor would cause this code to come up as well. There could be a loose connection or something else faulty with the system that would be causing the code to pop up and the only way of knowing is checking the whole system to find out what could be causing the issue.

      Judith,

It is either leaking at a fluid line, the connection to the actuator or on the actuator itself from a faulty seal. You would have to thoroughly inspect the entire assembly to know for sure where the leak is coming from. There is a good chance it is leaking out of the actuator itself since you found the fluid on the channel but it also could just be the line or a connection. You may have to gain access to all areas around the slide underneath to trace where it could be coming from. These are high pressure systems so it is usually easy to spot the area where it is coming from. I would start at the slide actuator.

They will be at the main power distribution center. You will see a set of breakers for everything on 120v and there should be a fuse panel nearby for everything on the 12v side. These centers can be in many different places but are usually in a lower cabinet typically in the center of the RV. I have seen them under rear beds and they can sometimes be in closets or cabinets. Typically they are visible but can sometimes be behind something. Every RV is different so if you are having trouble locating the distribution center it would be best to contact the manufacture and see if they can provide a diagram of where it is located.

need to get power to the 7 wire tow plug, found a black and a orange wire at the tow plug, in the harness. where do they go forward to? fuse block? relay? really don’t want to run a separate chassis batt to tow plug

    Reply
    • Customer Service

Hi Jim. The power to the 7-way is usually red or black. The colors are typically black or red-12v+, white-12v-, brown-running, green-right turn, yellow-left turn, blue-trailer brakes, and the center is AUX or backup lights which I have seen many colors. These colors can change between manufactures. There is no color code for the wires, some choose to use others so it can be really hard to distinguish what operates which function. It is best to test each wire and see what they operate. Using a probe light tester can help with this. If there are two wires not in the plug, they could be for another accessory. All wires should already be connected to the 7-way. If the vehicle came with the 7-way from the factory and there is no power to it, you might want to check the fuses up front. These will tie into the fuses for the chassis. The owners manual usually indicates the fuse with “trailer” or “tow” in the name. Most of the time if there is a 7-way, there is a hot wire to it. It might just need a fuse or relay installed to make it work. I know there are Ford models from 2013-2017 that did not install the fuse or relay but would sometimes put them in the glove box. Installing these would make it work. Again, every manufactures does something different so you might have to dig into the system and see what you have and would need. I hope this was helpful!

Hi there. Just had a quick question about levelers. We purchased this 2003 unit recently, and have it in our driveway which is pretty much level. We have the slideout extended currently and the levelers deployed while we are working on the inside a bit tweaking things. We are due to leave on an extended trip out of the country soon, and I wondered if we should go ahead and retract the levelers and chock the wheels before we leave. We will be gone a month. I was going to go ahead and bring the slideout in before we left of course, but wondered if there was a need to retract the leveling jacks or would it cause any harm to leave them lowered.

    Reply
    • Customer Service

Hi Dennis. Leaving your leveling jacks down for extended periods of time shouldn’t have any negative effect on the system. These are made to support the RV for long periods of time and will be fine being left down. The legs go get more exposed to the elements so when you return you might just want to visually inspect them before retracting to make sure there isn’t a lot of dirt or debris on them. Depending on what type of ground you are on, like gravel or grass, having the legs down will help distribute the weight more evenly and prevent the tires from sinking too far down making a tough rut to get out of. You should be fine leaving them down. I hope you have a great trip!

      Andrea,

There are many different brands and manufactures of batteries. Whatever you choose, just make sure it is a deep cycle battery. There are some manufactures that claim they have a “true” deep cycle and it works better than others. I don’t know how true it is but I can tell you that Crown says this about their batteries and they do work really well have last a long time. Their wet cell batteries are great and they do offer AGM batteries as well. You can typically get a longer life out of AGM and they are maintenance free but you will pay a premium price for them. They can also be mounted in any direction and don’t have to be vented so adding more batteries to a system is much easier with these. There are other great batteries out there but I would personally recommend Crown. I hope this was helpful!

Those batteries will receive a charge when you are plugged into shore power at the campground or when the vehicle engine is running. The shower power sends voltage to a converter that has a built in charging system for the batteries and is usually a multi stage charger. When traveling, the alternator will send a charge to the batteries as well. The converter charging system will only work when the battery disconnect switch is in the “ON” position too. I hope this helps!

    • Customer Service

      Roger,

You would want to get a generator if you want to operate the 120v system like the AC or use the outlets. Inverters take a lot more time to install and need a very large battery bank to be able to run the AC and this will drain the batteries. If you use a generator you will be able to run everything and it will also charge the batteries. If you only plan to run one AC and maybe a few other things a 3500w generator would be plenty. I hope this helps!

      Ray,

You are correct by connecting them in parallel. You want to make sure that the negative from the RV is at the start of the run and the positive from the RV is at the end. This allows for even drain and charge to the batteries. I have a diagram showing two batteries in parallel, it would be the same with three just make sure the RV connections are at the ends. As for the isolater switch, I will also provide a link to the install instructions. Essentially you will have the alternator connected to a terminal input and the output will be connected to the RV positive cable as well. That model does have the option for a second output but unless you have another battery for a different purpose, you wouldn’t need another output. The auxiliary output will be the main connection from the RV positive wires. I hope this helps!

Our 2014 Winnebago 3500 diesel sprinter with 4 cyl turbocharged mercedes engine has 3 AGM batteries. How long does this type of battery typically last?

    Reply
    • Customer Service

      James,

AGM batteries if properly maintained can last upwards of 6-8 years. They have the longest lifespan out of the different kinds of deep cycle batteries. As long as they have a good charging system, which your RV does, the terminals are kept in good clean shape and you use a battery tender while they are in storage it will keep them running for years to come. If you don’t remove the batteries when in storage but are able to keep the RV plugged in, this works just as well since the charger you have in the converter will keep the batteries well maintained.

      Dear Beverly,

Thank you for your patience. In response to your question-

If you are just talking about the ceiling panel, then yes this should be repairable from the inside. If you are talking about the roof flooring then this would have to be done from the outside. The ceiling panels can usually be cut out and new ones installed. The ceiling panels are installed over the walls so they usually have to be cut around the edges to be removed. You can then add more supports along the ceiling framing with 2×4’s to be able to attach the new panels too. Depending on the look and area you can sometimes get away with just overlaying with another panel without having to remove the old panel. This would make for an easier repair. If you have to replace the flooring on the roof, this can only be done from outside and the roofing material and components would have to come off. I hope this helps!

I full time RV in my 5th wheel for work. I am currently in a mobile home park and am providing my own power. I would like to connect a Communicating Thermostat to my AC system. I have been through the C wire issue and have solved that problem with a converter. I guess the question is how have people been able to connect Programmable residential thermostats and they work but this Communicating one won’t? Honeywell will not help and says will not work but I have seen it with mine own eyes that it will. Is the power sent to the relay different in a camper than a residential if so how do other RVers make their programmable work. Dazed and confused. BTW I do have WiFi internet. I have pics of wiring and am a prolific DIYer.

    • Customer Service

      Dear Richard,

Thank you for your patience. In response to your question-

The problem might be that the communicating thermostats need a constant power of 24VAC, which you said you have fixed. As long as you have 24VAC to power the thermostat you should be able to set up the rest like a regular RV thermostat. The 12v power coming in will be be connected to the R and Rc, for the output power of the furnace and AC. If you have a one speed fan thermostat you can only connect one speed of the AC, either green or gray unless you install a toggle switch or have a thermostat with two fan speeds. You then connect the output wires for the furnace and AC. As long as the thermostat doesn’t try to send out 24VAC to the furnace or AC it should work since you have the 12VDC for the power inputs. I have not seen anyone try to use a communicating thermostat with the converter. Most of the time people just use thermostats that run off of batteries so they don’t have to worry about the C, but all communicating thermostats need that constant power and I have yet to find out how they work in RV systems. Theoretically it should be fine as long at the 24VAC to the thermostat is only to power the controls and it doesn’t send it to anything else.

      Dear Gardner,

Thank you for your patience. In response to your question-

Well hopefully I can help so that doesn’t happen! You do want to pay attention to the wire coloring. Unfortunately there is no set color code for the wires. Usually is they are black and white, the black is positive and the white is negative. If they are red and black, the black will be the negative. If you still aren’t sure you would have to trace the wires. Usually the negative goes to a chassis ground, screwed into the metal of the frame somewhere. The positive usually goes to a disconnect switch, fuse or breaker. There is usually a safety fuse on the power distribution center that has a reverse polarity fuse. This fuse will blow if you accidentally hook up the battery cables backwards. So if you hook up the battery and nothing works, check for this fuse and if it blows reverse the battery connections. I hope this helps!
