Using Putty Tape
RV Lifestyle & Repair EditorsPutty tape is key to creating waterproof seals on your camper. Here are some tricks of the trade to help you make sure you’re using putty tape correctly.
On this camper that I've been working on this outside corner was messed up 16 ways from Sunday. Whoever had it before me put on just some big aluminum outside corner. It was not camper molding on the outside here. So I've taken that off. I've done some repair work on the inside.
Now I'm to a point where this trim can get put back on. Before I put this on I'm using putty tape in order to make sure I get a seal under that trim, a seal of approval hopefully. So the way I'm doing this is I've got some already in place here. I'm rolling it down this face first. Now when you look at this trim, keep in mind that the flange that's going that way on the camper is pretty wide.
The flange that's coming this way on the camper is pretty narrow. So here's the impact of that. I put the putty tape on, press it against the aluminum skin. And one of the benefits to this stuff is that because it's so malleable you can form it up against the ribs of the aluminum. I'm just gonna do a short section here so we can get through the teaching points.
And I cut it with the utility knife instead of tearing it, because sometimes when you tear it, it stretches the putty. And I don't wanna do that. I wanna make sure that the putty has full body, full thickness under the molding. So it takes one second to do that with the utility knife. And I think it just, I don't know, gives me a little peace of mind of uniform thickness of putty.
The consistency of this stuff it's, it's like Play Doh. So here where I already had stuff in place, if I do that, I've now melded them together. Now coming in the other direction, coming down this face, I don't need to come as far, because again this flange is narrow. So start there, conform to the shape, cut to length. Have some appeal.
Now take this excess and force that over and blend those, this one and this one. And that's really gonna do a nice job under that trim of sealing up that outside corner. That takes care of that section. I just gotta repeat the process the rest of the way down to the bottom of the camper and that trim can go back on.
