Planning Multiple Stays While RVing
Jason and Lisa McEwenTaking your RV out on a multi-stop trip requires a different level of planning. Lisa McEwen, a contributor with RV Lifestyle and Repair, dives into all of the nuances involved in moving your camper from spot to spot.
Taking time off
The McEwens have two daughters in elementary school. Summer obviously is a big time for them to do a lot of traveling because they have about two months off. There are so many different considerations that come into play when you're planning multi-campground trips, including:
• Travel time
• Destinations
• Budget
• RV repairs
• Excursions
• Work
The McEwen family starts the process of planning this trip by blocking out the time they’ll need.
Picking a destination
Sometimes, narrowing down the ultimate destination revolves around how far you want to travel and that narrows down where you go. If that destination is 20 hours away from your house, then that's your starting point. Get on your maps app and determine a 20-hour radius from your house and begin to narrow down your options from there.
Next, you need to decide if you are simply going there and coming back, or are there multiple stays involved?
The McEwens are currently planning for their 2025 summer trip and have decided to travel from their home in northern Florida out to San Antonio, Texas. It's a good chunk of time and a good chunk of days. The McEwen family plans to get out there and explore parts of Texas and then come back.
Distance and stays
The McEwen Family has eight weeks to travel, so what does it look like to get from point A to point B? The first thing they wanted to narrow down is how long they want to travel on travel days. Generally speaking, the McEwens try to aim for about 5 to 6 hours of actual travel time. But to start this trip they are going to push it a little bit.
The plan is to get a really early start and get to New Orleans as early in the day as possible. They are going to spend an entire week there and as they continue to move through each one of the stops they have planned, the amount of time that they are traveling will get shorter.
