So many RVers are able to travel and work remotely. Lisa McEwen, an RV Lifestyle and Repair Contributor, has tips and tricks to make your work/life balance on the road easier and more rewarding.

Scheduling

Customizing your schedule when working remotely requires flexibility. If you don't make a plan, work can suffer and play can suffer. You have to set boundaries for a work space. Where are you physically going to work? It could be in the RV or maybe a coffee shop, but knowing where you're going to work will help get you to work when it’s time to work.

Regardless of where you work you need to plan to work normal work hours. If it’s a remote work scenario that you need to be at work during a certain time that needs to be addressed similarly as if you were at home. If you are more of a contractor and can set your own hours, you have more flexibility in scheduling.

For example, you might be able to work four, ten hour days or you might be able to work a little bit in the morning while taking your afternoon off and then work a little bit in the evening when the kids are sleeping. In many cases, one parent might work while the other parent kind of hangs out with the kids. But if both parents are working to generate income, you’ll need to figure out a schedule that works for you.

Travel days

Designing your travel days requires planning as well. Are you trying to travel two consecutive days in a row? Are they shorter trips? How far are you going? Is there going to be any disruption in work? These are some of the questions the McEwen’s are constantly asking to achieve a good work life balance when thinking about how a travel day fits in.

The McEwens try to follow the 3/3/3 rule. If you follow the 3/3/3 rule, you:
- Limit driving to 300 miles a day
- Arrive at your destination by 3 p.m.
- Stay at that destination for 3 days

In some cases, you might not be able to follow this rule. Getting from point A to point B safely is the goal. Do what works for you.

Fun time

Make a list of the things you want to see and prioritize them. Get the family together and ask each person to pick their favorite thing.
