Salt Springs Review
Jason and Lisa McEwenSalt Springs Recreational Area is a hidden jewel in central Florida for RVers. It’s known for its clear Salt Spring, which is a constant 72 degrees year-round. It doesn’t matter what the outdoor temp is, the water remains that temperature regardless of the month or conditions around it. In this video, RV Lifestyle and Repair Contributors Jason and Lisa McEwen review the campground.
Location
Salt Springs Recreational Area is in central Florida, about 35 miles east of Ocala and a little over an hour from Daytona Beach.
Making reservations
You can make reservations in advance. Since the property is owned and operated by the National Forest Service, you won’t find the park listed on any state or county park registry. Instead, you’ll go to Recreation.gov to make your reservation.
Park amenities
The biggest draw for this campground is its natural springs. People have visited the springs for generations, and back in the day many believed the waters held healing powers. Today, people are more drawn to it as a recreational area where you can swim and snorkel. If you plan to come to the springs, consider bringing your own snorkel gear or even a floatie.
You won’t find a beach at the springs, just a swimming area and picnic spots. The area is also a good spot to take your boat out or go fishing. Salt Springs Run is nearby and a hotspot for anglers.
Campground review
The campground is the largest in the Ocala National Forest and the only one with full hookups for RVs. The facility offers spacious campsites for RVs and trailers, as well as a designated tent-only area. Sites are nicely shaded and well away from the busy day-use area.
You’ll find 106 sites, most of which have full RV hookups. Each site has its own paved (yes, paved) pad along with a picnic table. You’ll also find full bathhouses on site if you need them, and the campground has a basketball court.
Nearby area
If you come to Salt Springs, be aware, it is a bit secluded. You’re not near big attractions. The town has a gas station and grocery store, but that’s about it. If you want to visit nearby cities, you’ll travel a bit. Getting to Gainesville, for example, takes an hour. If you want to get to the coast, you’re closest to the Atlantic, but that’s about an hour drive too.
All in all, Salt Spring Recreational Area is a great RV park to visit in central Florida.
