Ways to Entertain Kids in Remote Locations

If you’re planning an RV trip to a remote location with kids, it’s a good idea to bring a few extra items to keep the kids entertained. RV Lifestyle and Repair Contributors Jason and Lisa McEwen have two girls and offer some ideas to keep your kids occupied when you’re visiting a location that’s off the grid.

Try a scavenger hunt

Before you leave, go online and find a few scavenger hunts. These premade activities, which provide a list of things kids can find outdoors like pinecones, birds, and flowers, are usually free and easy to print. If you want to reuse them, consider laminating them.

When the kids get bored, give them the scavenger hunt card and a dry erase marker and let them check off the boxes on the list.

Video games

You can bring a video console, if you’d like, and let the kids play games that don’t need WiFi. The McEwen family has a Nintendo Switch, so the girls play Mario Kart and other games for a bit when they’re looking for something to do.

Break out the board games

Consider playing a round of Clue, Uno, or another board game. The McEwen’s keep a small supply of board games on hand to break out when needed. If you want to save storage space, consider breaking the games into reusable pouches to avoid the large boxes.

Go for a bike ride

Bring the bikes or scooters and let the kids pedal their hearts out. Some campgrounds have paved biking trails too, which can add to the fun.

Have a campfire

What’s better than an evening campfire? Get some firewood, break out the camping chairs, and roast smores over the fire. Sit down and talk about your day or what you’ve liked most about the trip.

While it’s great to have a few activities on hand for the kids to do, you might be amazed at the ideas they come up with on their own to entertain themselves. RVing is a great way for kids to explore the outdoors and use their imagination.
