If the underside of your RV has significant rusting, it’s a good idea to get rid of that buildup and apply a product to prevent as much rust as you can. Rust isn’t uncommon on motor homes, especially those with undercarriages made mostly of steel.

It tends to be a cosmetic issue, however rust can eat into grounded wire connections and eventually disrupt power service. This is definitely true of electric steps, which can be prone to rusting where it connects to the metal chassis. Likewise, axles and knuckles are liable to rust and lead to annoying squeaking and possibly a bumpier ride.

So what should you do to treat and prevent rust? RV maintenance and repair expert Dave Solberg has a couple of products that he likes to recommend. Firstly, Fluid Film has a penetrant/lubricant that inhibits and protects against rust and corrosion. If you spray those points that are prone to corrosion with an inhibitor, that’s going to go a long way to defend against rust.

If your situation is pretty severe and you need to clean up a ton of rust buildup, Dave recommends Corrosion XD. This is a heavy duty product that is an inhibitor and a remover, so throw some of this on your rusted surfaces and watch the buildup melt away!
