RV Flooring Maintenance: Keeping Carpet Clean
Dave SolbergDescription
One of the largest challenges you're gonna have in your RV is keeping the floor clean. I think it's ironic, RV manufacturers put carpet in and that's the hardest component to keep clean in an RV. I suppose they do it because it gives it the homey feeling it's soft when you walk through, acoustics, whatever but it is a challenge. Now, in this RV here this is a 2002 Winnebago Brave and we had the original carpet in here and they actually use a very high pile carpet. This is gonna be running about 30 fiber ounces per yard and action back on the backside.
So this is a little easier to clean. However, it was getting pretty, pretty worn out. So we ended up putting a luxury woven vinyl in and now this is gonna be a lot easier to clean. It does have a pad on the backside but there are a few tips in cleaning carpet if you're gonna keep that in, in your RV the first thing is, as you get in and out of that RV with your shoes you're gonna be bringing sand, small rocks all that stuff gets in that fiber and just starts to tear it apart. And that's when it's gonna really start to wear the other thing is is if you have pets, pets have an oily skin, mostly dogs.
And as they lay on this carpet they're gonna absorb that oil. and it's gonna mat down. And this stuff's gonna look like it's 10 years old in about six months. And so the thing you want to do is dedicate a place for your pets to sleep. That's away from the carpet, put some kind of a pad or a runner in it put a pad on the outside to take your shoes off.
So you're not dragging things in and out. There are some aftermarket treatments that are used. Now, some of the carpet like the Shaw that's used in the higher line RVs actually has a treatment on here. So those fibers can't get that dirt and sand inside the fibers itself. And that makes it a lot easier to clean.
There are some aftermarket things that you can do as well but one of the best things you can do is vacuum the carpet do it once a week. If you're coming in and out more often, do it do a little more than that. There are some great vacuums on the market that are cordless now, like the Dyson which is a little more on the highline side. Shark makes a really good one as well. And it makes it so easy just to clean all this stuff right away.
The other thing you want to do is spot clean. Get some of these areas like this. Nature's Pride is one of the best. If again, if you have pets, that's a really good one. If you have urine stains and stuff like that in it.
So the main thing with carpet cleaning is to stay on top of it. Don't be bringing as much stuff inside. That's going to tear this up, keep the shades down. That's another thing you see carpet starts to fade pretty fast. If you leave those shades up and the sun hits it.
So a little bit of preventative maintenance and your carpet will last a lot longer.
