RV Grey Water System 101 and Benefits of Recycling Kit
RV Lifestyle & Repair EditorsDescription
RVers who like dry camping, or boondocking, know how valuable their fresh water supply can be. If you go days between spots with available fresh water, you need to conserve your supply as much as possible. The basic RV plumbing setup uses clean water to flush the toilets, much like a toilet at home will do. While this is normal at home with an endless supply of water, this can be a large waste when dry camping or on the road.
Your water system drains into two different tanks: grey water and black water. Black water is only from the toilet, while grey water comes from the shower, the hand sinks, and the kitchen sink. While not perfectly clean for drinking or cooking, the water in the grey tank is clean enough to use flushing toilets, saving the clean water for human consumption. The question is how to transform the RV grey water system into water to flush the toilet.
In this video you’ll learn how to install a grey water recycling kit. You’ll find out about the RV grey water system and how it treats the water to ensure no bacteria grow in your plumbing system using a special carbon wrapped filter. Watch to find out how the simple kit can be installed, and learn tips about how to keep the pipes clear of foreign objects that can clog the pipes. USI RV makes this kit, and it will greatly extend the capacity of your fresh water tank by ensuring you don’t use any of it just to flush the toilet.
For those of us, that do a lot of boondocking or dry camping. We know how important a fresh water system and water tank capacity is. Typically the system, like this compartment here We've got a freshwater tank that then has a pump an onboard pump that's going to bring water to our toilet or shower, our faucets inside. And each one of those drains and the blackwater tank typically just the toilet is going to go into the blackwater and the greywater, which is the shower and kitchen sinks and so forth goes into the greywater. Now sometimes the greywater is going to fill up a lot faster and we want to find a way to extend that.
There is a kit that has been developed. It's called a greywater recycling kit. That's going to help extend our fresh water system as well. And what it's going to do, it basically takes and plums in to our greywater tank and it'll have a check valve and a pump, and it runs a greywater through a filter. So it's a carbon wrap filter.
It's going to take away all the bacterias, all the odors and so forth. And then it's going to go through another check valve or another pump system that will actually take and run it up to the toilet. And so you can use it as blackwater. And what that does is it takes the greywater, which again it's cleaner water, it's shower, sink, that type of stuff. and it's using it to flush the toilet so we don't have to use fresh water out of our freshwater tank, just for the toilet side of it.
Now something that you'll want to make sure that you do, is don't let any food particles, that type of stuff go down the sink in your kitchen area. So you might want to put a strain, or strainer in there clean your plates off beforehand. 'Cause any particles that would get into that greywater system, then will get trapped into that filter. But you can extend your freshwater capacity by not having to use it for the toilet side by using this greywater recycling kit by USI-RV.
