RV Leveling Jacks Inspection and Maintenance

Dave Solberg
Duration:   2  mins

Description

It’s important to regularly inspect RV leveling jacks to ensure your Lippert slide room is in proper condition for use on any kind of roadtrip, whether you’ll be drydocking for days at a time or making a quick pit stop for the night. If you know all the components of your hydraulic slide room system are fully functional and well maintained, you can rest easier and get more bang for your buck.

While there’s not much to do in the way of maintenance (Lippert sliders are less stressful to care for than most), there are certainly things you can look for prior to hitting the road. To help you complete a thorough inspection, expert Dave Solberg walks you through his checklist for a hydraulic slide room system. He explains why each item is essential, and tells you what you should do if you find an issue with any of the components. As always, know before you go; save yourself the headache!

The leveling jacks on this unit are Lippert hydraulic jacks and they don't require a lot of maintenance. More importantly, just inspection. The first thing I want to make sure is that I have 12 volt power 'cause they're gonna power the pump by the house battery. So we want 12 volt power coming in here. We want to check the level of our fluid and this is going to be an ATF, an automatic transmission fluid. When checking the level of this we want to make sure all our slide rooms are in and our jacks are up because that's gonna force fluid back into this reservoir. And so I have a sight line that's right up on the top here. This would be a lot higher. So make sure you check that with all the fluids back in the inside of it. The other thing is just connections. Make sure the electrical lines. These are hydraulic lines right here. Now this system happens to go for the slide room as well as the jacks in the front here but I have two lines, this black and this orange they go up into my leveling jacks. I want to just check and make sure that I don't have any hydraulic leaks. Any fluid coming off these lines anywhere here. And then for the jacks themselves just visually inspect the jack, make sure it's not bent. Make sure you don't see any leaks. If I have any kind of dirt or stuff on the ram itself, I wanna clean that off with just a soap and water solution. I do not want to use any type of a spray lubricant on that because it's going to absorb grit and then it's going to tear out the seals on the inside of it. If I do see a little bit of hydraulic fluid leaking down the side of that, then I've got a seal that's out. I'm gonna have to replace that seal but otherwise just mostly visually inspect very little maintenance required.
